Modica, Sicily, Italy
We are 4 friends who have decided to invest energy and passion in a project in Sicily, in the Modica countryside, in the province of Ragusa.
“Sanapu Sicilia” was born in 2019.
“Sanapu”, or wild mustard in Modican dialect, is a typical plant of our territory that grows spontaneously in uncultivated fields. Like all herbs that grow spontaneously and wildly, it is a strong, resistant plant full of aromas and flavors. It is a herb that is part of those important food resources in the rural populations of the past, who got their meals because they knew the nature around them in depth. In today's reality, man no longer needs to collect herbs to survive but dedicating himself to research and their knowledge allows us to observe that variety is beauty and richness, and that respecting biodiversity is a way to allow it to exist. A gift that we give to ourselves, to those who share our ideas, but above all to those who come after us.
Most of our land is located in Cava Ispica, a river valley that cuts across the Iblean plateau between the cities of Modica and Ispica for 13 km.
“In the quarry there are partially abandoned citrus groves, secret gardens and trees that
whisper with their leaves the stories of those who had chosen this lost paradise at the bottom of the island as their home.”
The soil is a mosaic of brown soils and red Mediterranean soils and, although all the sources have been captured, a certain degree of humidity is maintained even in the dry summer period.
In our land we mainly grow fruit trees, in particular citrus fruits, but also medlars, pears, figs, persimmons, walnuts, carob trees, olive trees and the vegetables we need for our Mediterranean chutneys such as onions, peppers, tomatoes and much more.
We don't use any type of chemical product.
In this way, the soil naturally preserves its fertility, in accordance with the natural cycle of plant and animal life.
Spontaneous plants and insects have a specific role in the fertility of the soil and in the balance of the ecosystem, which we respect throughout the production process, from harvesting to transformation.
The fruit we collect is transformed into jams and preserves which follow a manufacturing process that is as natural and artisanal as possible without the addition of preservatives, colorings and artificial flavourings
We believe in a more direct exchange between the countryside and the city, between the producer and the consumer, so that both are more aware and responsible actors of their own choices. We want those who purchase our products to know that there are alternative practices to the logic of exploitation of people and nature. We like to think that each product, in addition to containing all the aromas and flavors of our land, can also release the values and sustainable philosophy of "Sanapu Sicilia".
