Propolis is a substance collected by bees on the buds and bark of various plants during the hottest hours of the day and transported inside the hive, where it is processed. Bees use it to build defense barriers near the entrance to the hive and reduce the flight hole and to plug the cracks. Mixed with wax it is used to strengthen the honeycombs, cover the internal walls of the hive, as well as the cells before laying. This coating with propolis contributes to the healthiness of the hive itself. Propolis also plays a role of fundamental importance for maintaining the thermal balance of the hive, as it is used to attach the various parts of the hive to each other, making it almost hermetic.
